ESM™ Embedded System Modules are complete computers on a module. They consist of the hardware (CPU, chip set, memory, I/O) which is not fixed to any application-specific function, an FPGA programmed in VHDL code, which provides I/O that is also independent of a specific application, and the BSP support.
ESM™ modules are based on PCI. They have two system connectors: J1 has a fixed signal assignment, while J2 is variable depending on the final application-specific configuration of the ESM™ and the carrier board. J2 also feeds the I/O signals of the functions programmed in the FPGA to the carrier card. A third connector, J3, is used for additional signals on those boards that come without front I/O connectors.
For a first evaluation of the functions of any ESM™ we strongly recommend to use the corresponding ESM™ starter kit. An ESM™ kit consists of the ESM™ CPU module (with front I/O), an FPGA loaded with a standard configuration of additional I/O functions, the ATX-compatible carrier card with I/O connectors and PCI slots, an external PSU, cables, and an adapter to mount a PCI-104 module.
Within the final application, ESM™ modules can be used as stand-alones, can be plugged onto a customized carrier card and/or stacked with PCI-104 modules.
ESM™ Embedded System Modules have been developed to work also in rugged environments - qualified or screened regarding shock, vibration, drop, resonance, humidity, chemicals, and up to -40 to +85°C operation temperature.
MEN boards have a long-term availability of minimum 5 up to 10 years (and longer according to individual agreements) depending on the components used.
