Passenger Information and Security Services
PIS and entertainment solutions give passengers orientation regarding stops, schedules and routes, hints for changing trains, short-term changes of the route or delays. They also provide the news of the day and the weather forecast or play movies and music. Content servers are used to store those data and programs. They connect to the screens in the vehicle via wired LAN or WLAN. Apart from displaying pictures, text and audio data, these systems can also control TV or radio programs. Content servers connect to the outside world, e.g. the depot, to receive up-to-date information while travelling.
In one application, a 3U Intel Core based standard CompactPCI system is used as PIS platform and central content server, connecting to customized Intel Atom based 15” information display computers. With a train unit of up to 18 cars and a maximum train length of then 315m, every car typically contains between two to six displays. All devices operate fanless according to operation temperature class Tx (-40 to +70/+85°C).
Internet access points in a train provide convenience functions to passengers such as mobile office, telephony, information and entertainment. At the same time, they are essential to exchange train diagnosis data with the depot, get route information or transmit data from surveillance systems. Communication inside the vehicle is typically based on Ethernet TCP/IP or UDP/IP protocols and connection to the outside world on wireless interfaces from WLAN via GSM-R to LTE.
In one installation, the Internet access, the train surveillance and the communication between the wagons are controlled via satellite. One standard 3U CompactPCI system houses three independent Intel Core based computer units on separate backplanes and with separate power supplies: A satellite system with three CPU cards, a content server with one CPU card and a side card for the RAID system, and a storage server with four CPU cards.
Train surveillance protects the passengers and the train equipment from harm. Digital video recorders and display servers connecting to the cameras, as well as surveillance displays in the driver cab are part of the typical control equipment.
In one application, four digital video recorder units and two video display servers are used per train set, each housed in its individual standard 3U CompactPCI rack based on Intel Core single-board computers. In another application, a wireless embedded network controller box combines passenger information with security applications. Both applications use UIC 612 compliant control displays operating with low-power AMD architecture.
Railway Data Center menRDC – The One-Fits-It-All Solution:
Using menRDC, typical passenger service offerings like passenger information (PIS), entertainment, wireless access to Internet on train, video surveillance and the recording and storage of all relevant data around those services can be hosted on a single computer platform. Thanks to its scalability menRDC is able to host any desired mixture of operator and passenger service applications – PIS, surveillance, maintenance and diagnosis, efficiency management, vehicle-to-vehicle/land communication.

The DC15 is a rugged, fanless and maintenance-free human-machine interface (HMI) for the train driver cabin desk, interfacing for example as display control unit of the Computer Based Train Control system (CBTC) to the Automated Train Operation system (ATO).
