CompactPCI Serial Revision 2 is here!

As recently announced by PICMG, the American consortium for embedded technology, an update of the industry standard CompactPCI Serial is now available – CompactPCI Serial Revision 2. The successor of the well-known CompactPCI standard, being four years old now, has several tens of thousands of installations in the field in the meantime.

BLUE BELL, Pa. July 2015 - Recent news from PICMG highlights an additional step forward towards the perfection of modular computer systems, and is impressive proof of the technological superiority of CompactPCI Serial when compared to other modular solutions:

  • CompactPCI Serial has proven itself to be a self-evident migration path to CompactPCI
  • CompactPCI Serial replaces the parallel world of CompactPCI by state-of-the-art serial busses
  • CompactPCI Serial exclusively uses existing standards – Ethernet, PCI Express, SATA and USB (3.0)
  • CompactPCI Serial is, due to its deliberately simple and thereby cost-effective technology, found in a wide range of applications in industrial automation and transportation.

CompactPCI Serial – Versatile and Successful

The deciding driving force for the update of CompactPCI Serial to revision 2 was an additional simplification of both the specifications and the technology.

The CPCI-S.0 document has literally been reworked in clearer words from page to page, to improve usability. On the technology side, the flexibility of the standard has been optimized.

The specification now also explains the order of the components in the system considering compatibility. This means that unlike other standards, no different profiles are defined, which would lead to an unmanageable variety of mutually exclusive options.

CompactPCI Serial is a homogenous standard with continuous compatibility – clear, practicable and user-friendly. For this reason revision 2 is, of course, backward compatible with revision 1.
