More Information on Rugged Electronics for Rail & Public Transport
Modern vehicles for public transport for rail or road have many functions directly controlled by computer systems such as the drive and speed control, the control of doors, lighting or heating.
As environments are often harsh and narrow, computers in transportation applications must be robust and compact. They are typically networked by fieldbuses (CAN bus, MVB/WTB, ProfiNet), increasingly also by safe Ethernet variants. For trains compliance with at least parts of the EN 50155 is often mandatory. Buses and coaches require ISO 7637-2 automotive certification.
Onboard devices in transportation support, e.g., satellite positioning, data logging and wireless data communication. They are often capable of retrieving data from vehicle electronics systems and can be integrated with other systems present in the vehicles.
Vehicle gateways are increasingly used to enable a common communication platform. Real-time passenger information (RTPI) based on current vehicle positions, infotainment functionality and automated fare collections (AFC) are provided on board the vehicles.
CCTV solutions enabling live transfer of stills and videos are often installed as part of security solutions for public transport. Such video surveillance systems can be integrated with the panic buttons which public transport drivers often have access to for use in case of emergencies.
IT Infrastructure for Trains and Buses
Computers for communication have mission-critical tasks when they transmit data and voice information between the vehicle, the wayside equipment and control center. They are also used for passenger convenience (infotainment), with up-to-date information loaded to onboard servers and transferred to displays. And they support security (surveillance systems), recording camera data streams to video recorders and transmitting data to the control center. With in-vehicle communication mostly based on standard Ethernet, the outside is connected using different wireless standards (GSM-R/P, GPRS, Edge, UMTS, HDSPA, LTE, WLAN).
Reliable Functional Safety for Vital Train Control
Many applications in railways are safety-critical and demand safety levels from SIL 1 to SIL 3 or SIL 4, often resulting in redundant systems with defined error handling. These include automatic train operation and protection (ATO/ATP), the safe operation of signals and switches and other functions in wayside control and traffic management. MEN railway electronics are in accordance with all national train control systems like the European ERTMS/ETCS, the American PTC system, the Chinese CTCS or the Russian KLUB-U and are deployed in applications like permanent positioning, signaling control, diagnosis, wireless service and several applications for automatic train control and protection.
